Europe gets ready for Trump trade war
Political passions are heating up everywhere! No one can stop talking about what Donald Trump might do now that he has been elected. European politicians and economists are no exception. European leaders are gearing up for a trade war with America. Senior diplomats and officials in Brussels are not hiding it. They have learned their lessons from the Republican’s first term. Now, they are united and determined to push back. Many EU officials seem to agree.
One high-ranking European diplomat said that they would strike back swiftly and decisively. According to him, Brussels already has a plan for a potential trade war with Trump.
Another diplomat from a different European country emphasized that eurozone nations were coordinating their strategy, with the European Commission leading the charge. EU officials believe that Brussels is capable of winning this trade war.
In fact, the bloc has already put together a rapid-response task force to prepare for the aftermath of the US elections. “Last time we didn’t believe how far Trump would actually go,” the first senior diplomat said. “This time we’ve had time to prepare. Europe has changed a lot, and we will be ready to act.”
Officials believe that the tougher the countermeasures, the faster the Republican president will come to the negotiating table. The immediate goal is to force the newly elected head of the White House to start talks right away. Under this scenario, the EU would have the upper hand against the US.
However, there is a less appealing scenario. It is “a spiral of tit-for-tat retaliations stretching out over years.” Nevertheless, European leaders remain optimistic. “The Commission has prepared substantial retaliation so that we push Trump for a deal in the first round,” the first diplomat said.
